California

April 2000

Day 7

We left Lake Tahoe and drove along US-50. I slept through much of it, but woke up in time to see Apple Hill, an area with excellent conditions for apple trees.

We spent half an hour in Sacramento at the State Capital Bldg. Very ornate 1900's-era building. There is a small exhibit about how California has no Governor's Mansion.

Out of Sacramento and west on I-80 to Viansa, a winery. I slept through the trip, so I don't know where I am, and the winery "tour" was just a wine tasting, so I didn't pay much attention.

At 3, we arrived in San Francisco.

The cross street goes almost straight down.
I didn't wait long, hopped the California St cable car, and met Hal at his office. He gave me a tour, we played a game of Foozball, and he took me out to a very nice restaurant for dinner. We went to the Metreon, which is a nice little plaza and, as Hal described it, "a shrine to Sony." We walked around the Microsoft Store (ugh) a bit, looking at new laptops. At 9, I caught a cab back to the hotel. I forgot to bring my camera.

I got back to the hotel around 9:30. Finally, in a fit of stupidity, I called Alison to check in, forgetting about the three-hour time difference.
