California

April 2000

Day 6

First stop this morning was Columbia, a restored 1850's-era mining town. A street of old wooden buildings, with an old fire house and pumper, a 31-star flag, and a bunch of saloons.

Our tour group. Don't even bother asking for names. However, the guy in the lower left, and the woman and two kids at the far right, are a family from Australia. Also toward the far right (bald man and woman in green sari) are a couple from India. Next to them are a woman (in black) and man (seated, in suit) from Viet Nam. I'm wearing a yellow shirt, a little left of center.
An hour later (along highway 49. Get it?) we stopped in Jackson, another little gold-mining town. Pizza for lunch.

At about 2:30, we stoppd at Mormon-Carson Pass for pictures of the Sierra Nevada mountains.

At 3:15, we stopped at Lake Tahoe (the lake, not the town) for more pictures.

At 4, we arrived at the Horizon Hotel in the Nevada half of Lake Tahoe. I dropped about $40 at the casino, grabbed a sub for dinner, and saw Rules of Engagement.

I learned that, at the Horizon Hotel, the phone number printed on the phone does not match the phone number of the hotel (the area code is long out of date). I also learned that, at the Horizon Hotel, you should not open your sliding glass doors unless you are sure there is a balcony there (there isn't).
