California

April 2000

Day 4

Morning started with a 2-hour tour of the Hearst Castle. Hearst bought, basically, a huge mountain range and built a house there, with statues, tapestries, artwork, and bunches of stuff.

This is an outdoor pool at the castle
and the view from the poolside
These two pictures are of the same door of the main building
the arch (left) is above the door (right)
Next was a 2-hour drive along the Big Sur Coast Highway, a very pretty, very windy road cut into some very steep mountains. Lunch at the Big Sur Lodge, and another hour to Monterey.
Views of the mountains from the bus window

Landscape pictures never come out well, and are worse from the window of a moving bus. Can you see the "road work" sign in the first picture? A storm washed out half the road. It's only one lane, with flag-men and construction. We sat there for half an hour.

Spent an hour on Cannery Row on Monterey's waterfront, watching kids play in the water. A quick drive through Pacific Grove (a community of golf courses) and to the 17 Mile Drive, past Pebble Beach golf course and the Lone Cyprus.

They ask you not to feed the animals at the waterfront along 17 Mile Drive. Apparantly, nobody listens.

This bird let me walk right up and take a picture.
